Brainstorming a community rebuild list
Scenario:
- A town was just destroyed by an F4 tornado (Tornadoville)
- Some people had home insurance, but most did not.
- Most small towns have members that are in construction
Helping your Communities with the Initial Rebuild
1. Allow Red Cross to come in and help.
a. Not Quick or Efficient
b. But they can still help
2. Allow any and ALL private organizations that are willing to help
a. Churches
b. Small non-profits
3. All town members:
a. Use their resources to help other
b. Basic damage control and cleanup.
i. Fencing
ii. Moderate home repair and land cleanup
iii. Remove large trees
iv. Give room and board to the new homeless
4. I don’t really need to spend any more time here, because there is a lot of resources for this.
How Do We Help with Post-Response Community Rebuilding?
1. Large call to action for all local and regional businesses
a. Larger businesses have more expendable funds
b. Local businesses will have the biggest gain from involvement
i. They become town heros
c. Businesses have more expendable funds will need to come up with cost-effective, efficient processes to cover needs
i. Clothing Shops: Basic clothing needs (not expensive trendy items)
ii. Grocery Stores and Restaurants: Basic food needs
- Rice, oats, basic veggies
- Temporary diet change, higher quality foods not necessary
- Best connections to get cheap foods
iii. Construction Crews, Businesses, and Engineers: New Cheap Permanent Homes
Rebuilt
- Trailers are temporary
- Need to rebuild
a. Current homes are inefficient
b. Build earthships with window AC units
c. Everything has a manual backup
i. Electric and Hand Pumps
ii. Heating with UV collectors
Most efficient
d. Place sun-block roofs over buildings
i. Small sprinkler systems on roof
e. Earthships are great tornado shelters
f. What about earthquakes
i. They hold up to that fairly well
ii.Use “safety pod” furniture
iii. Vents attached to pods
2. Neighborhoods should have a community area for gardening as well as all regulations for food production lifted
a. Each member has free rein of their own property
3. This is a great time to rebuild LAND and STRUCTURES
a. Permaculture design
b. Insurance Money
c. Resurface to include harvesting of
i. Water
ii. Sun
iii. Wind
4. If Everyone in the community is donating time and labor, much less money is involved.

a. Obviously monetary donations will also be taken
Individual Efforts during a Rebuild, and The Law of Transactions
1. None of the materials are free.
a. We can reduce costs by pitching in and taking donations
2. Everyone has the OPTION to help rebuild or not
a. These people do not get the added benefits
i. Donated food
ii. Donated materials
iii. Donated tools, time, hands
b. Businesses should NOT opt out
i. They would be demonized
ii. Probably would go out of business
3. Most of the efforts and materials should be from private parties or companies
a. Catered to those that are helping
b. This ensures that labor input isn’t lost
4. Simple: If you help, you get help. If you don’t, then you don’t get help.
5. Everything will have to be coordinated by need, not who has money
Normalization Stage of Rebuilding
- Rebuilding has been going for a while now
- People can normalize again
- Neighborhoods should become more involved
- Outside efforts:
a. MUST BE REWARDED
b. Leaders of groups that help, will be brought in to see what good was done
i. Allow them to feel good for the help
c. Have a feast or two in their honors
We Have a Plan for Rebuilding, But What Can We Do Now?
1. The system that I have outlined is just an ideal outline
a. It is designed to be done where a difference can be made: small towns
2. Before disaster strikes:

Community That Works Together
a. Become a community that works together voluntarily
b. Design systems that are beneficial to the volunteer
c. You can only gain from this setup and resulting relationships.
