We know every mom is different, and we also know that a woman’s love of outdoor adventure isn’t dependent upon whether or not she has kids. That’s why we spent extra time this year gathering up a list of our favorite Mother’s Day gifts for women in every life stage. Whether she’s rejiggering her hiking routine to accommodate young kids, leaving them behind with grandma, or choosing not to have kids at all, these products will keep your favorite women loving the outdoors all year long.
For the Hike-Loving Mom
MSRP: $22
Darn Tough’s Hiker Micro Crew socks offer an ideal mix of breathability, comfort and quality for feet-on-the-move. We think they’re some of the best hiking socks out there, especially because they’re made in Vermont and you can swap them out for a new pair (for free!) if they start to snag. Their moisture-wicking properties help prevent blisters and their medium weight adds a bit of extra cushion during long hikes (especially long hikes with kids on your back). If the mom in your life tends to hike or snowshoe during the winter months, you might consider grabbing her the heavyweight version of these miracle socks. If she’s a trail runner, Darn Tough offers options for that, too.
For the Always-Hydrated Mom
MSRP: $34.95
The 24-fluid-ounce Hydro Flask Standard-Mouth water bottle is a versatile, durable stainless steel bottle that keeps hot liquids hot for up to six hours, and cold liquids cold for up to 12 hours. It’s small enough to pack in a tote bag or roomy purse and it doesn’t leak. We also love that the Hydro Flask doesn’t retain flavors like some of the other water bottles we’ve tried over the years; it makes a great gift for everyday use and for hiking trips where a cold drink makes all the difference!
For the Adventurous Mom
MSRP: $250
Active moms will love the highly reviewed Osprey Poco AG Child Carrier, which is lightweight, ventilated, easy to adjust and offers good lower-back support. REI customers love the built in sun-shade, large zipper compartment for storage, and the pack’s easy-to-access hip pockets.
For the Mom Who Loves to be Cozy
MRSP: $119
For moms who love to snuggle up during fall, winter or spring days, this North Face jacket is a perfect choice. The Osito 2 comes in a range of sizes, from XS-XXXL and it’s one of the coziest fleece jackets on the market, with nice pockets at each hip and soft wrist cuffs. The jacket is perfect for cold evenings, running errands around town, or for outdoor adventures when pack weight doesn’t matter.
For the Camp Cooking Aficionado
MSRP: $79.95
If you know a mother who loves to cook for her family and friends at camp, consider gifting her a pre-seasoned, 6-quart dutch oven, which can go straight into the campfire, but also works on the stove or in the oven. REI customers love this dutch oven pot for sautéing, simmering, baking, broiling, braising, frying and roasting. Hand off this gift with a list of awesome camp recipes, too, like this one for making a Dutch Oven Apple Pie.
For the Yogi Mama
MSRP: $88
Active moms will love these comfortable, high-waisted yoga pants. They’re made with pockets, have durable fabric, and they don’t slide down. For women who plan to hike, stretch, run or do other activities, we think these pants are a fabulous option. They’re also longer than most of the other yoga pants on the market, which means they’ll work for tall and short women alike.
For the Metrics-Obsessed Mom
MSRP: $130
This little fitness tracker offers a lot of bang for its buck: the vivosmart 4 tracks sleep, stress, heart rate, steps and more. It’ll even send movement reminders and it can be used for activities beyond running, like yoga and pool swims. And, the vivosmart can be connected to a phone, if desired, to allow busy moms to see their texts and calls on the go.
For the Rain-Loving Mama
MRSP: $129 (jacket), $99 (pants)
If you know a mama who plans to brave the rain all winter and spring, a good rain jacket and set of rain pants are a must. We like the Patagonia Torrentshell option, since both the jacket and pants are made with recycled nylon and offer rain and wind protection. These shells are warm and lightweight, and the jacket has venting pit zips for sweaty hikes! Both items fit true to size.
For the Winter-Loving Woman
MSRP: $199
Patagonia makes several awesome winter jackets but we especially love the Nano Puff, a synthetic-alternative down jacket that offers insulation, even in wet weather. Moms who plan to spend a lot of time outside, especially those braving cold temperatures in the Midwest and New England, will especially love this jacket for hikes, city winters and long walks. The Nano Puff is lightweight, warm, dries quickly, fits true to size and compresses easily into a purse or backpack. This jacket is also made with recycled materials.
For the Alpine-Adventures Loving Mom
MSRP: $100 (top); $95 (bottoms)
Smartwool’s merino base layers are a simple but worthwhile luxury, especially for moms who like to spend time hiking, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and backpacking during the winter months. Smartwool’s 250 line is midweight, so it offers warmth without making you sweaty, and the merino wool is super soft. We also like that these base layers wick moisture and reduce the buildup of smell-inducing bacteria, meaning that you can wear these items over and over again without washing them.
For the Wanderlusting Mom
MSRP: $109
Sometimes the simplest gifts are the most useful. We love duffel bags for a number of use cases, including carrying extra gear while camping, schlepping ski equipment up to the mountain or packing for a weekend away. The REI Co-op Big Haul 60 Duffel holds about a week’s-worth of clothes and it’s quite durable. We also like that it comes with customizable straps and a mesh pocket for storing dirty clothes or smaller items.
For the Summer-Loving Mama
MSRP: $25
There are very few sandals on the market that live up to the hype of the Teva Olowahus. These kicks are perfect for beach adventures or evenings at camp, and they’re incredibly comfortable for walking around town. Compared to other flip flops, these sandals are much more supportive and they even have a bit of traction—plus, they’re stylish, too.
