People think that the “firearm control” people just want to take away your weapons today and they are going to pass a bill that will abolish ownership today. That isn’t going to happen. That is what an idiot would do, and although some politicians are idiots, most of them are quite smart.
This is what I would do if I were to attempt gun control. I would make some outrageous bill that we all know wouldn’t pass, and have it shot down. Then I would come back with another bill that didn’t seem nearly as rediculous as the first one, and add in a few ear-marks for support. This gives me a recipe for a passed bill.
So, if I wanted to abolish ALL handguns, my passed bill would look like… All handguns must be seven rounds or less. If a magazine has more than seven, a spacer must be installed to limit capacity. I would earmark something related for support, like research into new trigger safety devices.
Over time, people would just see the policy as normalcy. And something else is introduced and passed. So as time goes on, people see guns as weapons, and not as a way to fill the table. Media starts to spin all murders as the “gun’s fault” instead of the person’s fault. They start giving ridiculous death rate numbers, without saying that we should outlaw hammers because more people died by being hit with a hammer than guns.
Over time the firearm is not a tool, it is a dangerous weapon that should have policies in place to control access to them. Children can’t play with gun toys that make machine gun sounds, because it is a “gateway drug” to a murderer!
As years pass, I will work to introduce more bills that limit the functionality of your firearms, until they are much less useful, and continue with media talk about the dangers, so we have a bunch of pamper wearing hippies against guns.
I would do this slooooow and methodically. It takes a few generations for the normalcy bias to catch up. Remember a rule here: What is tolerated today will be normal tomorrow. What we tolerate, our children find as normal. Then they tolerate more and their children see that as normal. Slowly, our freedoms are chipped away at, and firearms is no exception.
But, somehow, these smart and devious members of congress, are not smart enough to realize that they are taking liberties away from “LAW ABIDING CITIZEN.” The degenerate didn’t follow laws before, and a new one isn’t going to make him now. So you have a bunch of criminals that can still get any black-market firearm available, but all the “good-guys” are barely carrying pop-guns.
What do we do now? Since we are already a little bit down the normalcy spectrum, we have to backpedal. We need to create gun rights activists and we do this by creating firearm owners. We create firearm owners by creating firearm lovers and lovers by teaching them about the usefulness and fun of shooting.
I have already talked about this before, but we need to be firearm salesmen. We take the drug-dealer approach.
We give them a little bit of fun on the range, but MAKE IT FUN FOR THEM and don’t push your agenda on them. Take them to lunch and let THEM TALK ABOUT IT, not you! You are listening, not talking. Then you let them go back to the range if they want. Don’t spend more than a couple hours doing it their first time.
Next, time you take them shooting, you take them for a couple hours, then take them to lunch, and then show them how to field clean it. Don’t be all OCD about it. We are making this FUN!
When we can turn their fears into a loving respect, then we have created a gun lover. The rest is up to them. Be available for their questions.
We can fight the normalcy-bias of gun control laws by teaching the ignorant about the benefits and fun of gun ownership, thereby creating a new gun owner.
