Building on my video last Friday, and my post on hugelkulture, my children and I teach you to plot contour lines on your land or yard to be used as a contour map for Hybrid Hugel Garden beds.
Hugelkulture is the way to go if you want a garden that will continue to add nutrients to itself over time. You build beds with wood as the core. The wood core will decompose and add nutrients to the ground. It also simulates what happens in a forest, and when it decomposes under the ground a fungal layer is created that works in a symbiotic relationship with the plant roots. Both build each other up. Hugel beds retain more water as well.
I will give a quick synopsis of the video:
My children and I explain what a contour is
I teach you the ideas about contour being useful in the layout of your raised bed
I show you how swales follow contour up-land of your bed
I learn that my yard is full of water holding clay, which may change my idea of creating swales.
…and more (what you are supposed to say, when you don’t know what else to say)
