St Mary's Glacier

Idaho Springs, Colorado

One of our first days at an elevation over 10,000 feet was at St. Mary’s Glacier.
St. Mary’s is a Very cool little town and the hike starts off the road, just up from the town. There are two different parking spots, but essentially one route up.
There is quite a bit of vertical walking to get to the glacier, but it is short and absolutely worth the effort.
I recommend when you get halfway up, be willing to walk off the rocky path to the right. We found a nice little waterfall that we hung out at on the way up.
It was nice because there weren’t many people there.
When on the glacier, it was hard to get great photos of the wilderness we were in because of how packed it was. EVERYBODY loves this place.
If you want to get away from the crowds, and you are willing to put just a little risk in your life, you can climb around on the boulders and rocks to get to the glacier.
I bouldered my way to the top of the glacier and then shoe-skied down it.
Next awesome thing to do is to grab your water filter and grab some crystal clear water from the glacier melt. It was delicious!
This was also an opportunity to get to know other outdoor types, since there were so many people there.
