I am going to show you how to make an A-Frame level that can easily be used to contour map your land.  I will attach some photos and go through the basic construction of the A-Frame level and then I will give a video showing the level and how to use it to determine the contour of your land.

You will need:

      • 2- 1 inch by 8ft pieces of lumber
      • a level

      • zipties
      • skilsaw, chopsaw, or jigsaw
      • drill
      • 1 inch wood screws
      • carpenters or combination square

First, cut the first 8 foot piece of wood in half, so you have 2 pieces  that are 4 foot in length.  brace them into a 90 degree angle.  drill and screw them together.

Second, cut another piece about 2 foot in length.  You will want to make your angles at a perfect 45 degree angle to the 4 foot pieces. and drill and screw it to the other pieces to make an “A” shape.  I would want to find a perfectly level surface, and ensure that you attach it level.

Third, ziptie a cheap level to the A-frame level along the horizontal piece of wood.  Now, go out and check the contour of your land!

Now, here is a video showing you basically how I built the level and how to use the level for contour:
