Learning to make Liquors and Spirits is a great skill to learn Alcohol uses are abundant for the Clever Survivalist. Besides being a potential barter item, Alcohol has many uses.
Vodka is made from potatoes or grain and is clear in color typically. It is great as a mixer for many drinks. It is great for cleaning because of the disinfecting nature of it. Vodka is pretty close to rubbing alcohol when it comes to being antibacterial. Also, just like alcohol, vodka is a good use in a crunch for reducing the effects of poison ivy. If you mix vodka (good vodka) with mint oil or cinnamon oil (or soak cinnamon powder in a jar of vodka and strain it after a few days in a coffee filter), vegetable glycerin, and water you get a great antiseptic mouthwash great for your mouth health. Brushing could be from just baking soda. Once again, like alcohol, it can clean the lenses of glasses. It will prevent rusting of most metals in it, like razor blades that need to be reused. It will kill foot odor when used as a soak.
Whiskey is made from fermented grain mash, and aged in wooden casks. It can be used to cure congestion by mixing it with honey, lemon, or other herbs and heating it. It is good for a toothache if you soak the tip of a rag in it, then dab your gums around the tooth with it and maybe stuff it in by your gum and just let it sit. It will get absorbed through the gums. Higher content whiskey can be used for torch fuel. Even though there are better things to use, whiskey is known to reduce waterborne illnesses when some is added to drinking water and allowed to sit and mix, but It is not 100 percent, so only do it as a last resort before drinking untreated water.
Beer is made from a variety of different ingredients. It can be used as a hair conditioner that will add shine. The yeast in beer (in small quantities) is good for plant life. Beer is great for your skin. A beer bath will soften your skin thanks to the malts. The darker the beer and more malts, the better. Beer is AWESOME for dish flavoring. Darker beers usually give more flavor. The carbonation is great for some stomach discomforts. Flat beer can polish wood furniture. Bees are attracted by beer, so you can use this for attracting them, or misdirecting them, depending on your intentions.
Well, if none of these uses are good for you, you could always drink it.
It is very important that we continuously learn new skills, like making alcohol. They are almost always useful when we are not in a survival scenario, but they become invaluable when we hit these times. I love doing a blog, because it forces me to learn new things and skills. Say what you want, but those who enjoy learning new things every day will always be better off.
Are there any skills that you are currently learning that will help you in survival?
